The Replacements - I’ll Be You

When the ‘Mats toured with Tom Petty in 1989, this song was on the album Don’t Tell A Soul that had just came out that year. Clearly, Petty copped the “rebel without a clue” line for his song “Into The Great Wide Open.”

When asked how he felt about the theft, Westerberg answered “I’d steal something back from him, if I could find something I liked.”

Side note: MPLS’ own Jayhawks also opened for Petty, and are also the victims of his occasional lifting. Listen to the intro for “Waiting For The Sun” and then listen to the intro for “Mary Jane’s Last Dance,” released a year after the Jayhawks song.
